Somerset Medical Center (SMC) is a 355-bed nonprofit teaching hospital in Somerville, New Jersey. Our mission is to deliver high-quality health care services with measurable outcomes to the community we serve. As the only hospital in Somerset County, SMC touches every member of the community and provides a cutting-edge, patient-friendly facility that is considered one of the finest in New Jersey.
SMC continually strives to improve the quality and accessibility of health care. Recently, Somerset Medical Center undertook an extensive $100 million expansion and modernization project that included a new 40,000-square-foot Emergency Department, two hotel-caliber pavilions for oncology and medical/surgical services, and seven additional operating suites. SMC is one of nine state-designated Medical Coordination Centers, which coordinate emergency services during public health emergencies. In addition, in 2007 SMC opened The Steeplechase Cancer Center, a comprehensive outpatient facility, and will soon begin construction on a new neuroscience pavilion.
Somerset Medical Center is an affiliate of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and a clinical research affiliate of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Somerset has a staff of 650 board-certified physicians representing all major medical, dental and surgical specialties, including oncology, eating disorders, invasive cardiology, behavioral health, physical rehabilitation, sleep disorders, diabetes management, tobacco dependency treatment and more. The medical center is fully accredited by The Joint Commission.
Somerset Medical Center's recent accomplishments include:
- Recipient of HealthGrades 2010 Joint Replacement Excellence AwardTM, ranking among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide in joint replacement surgery.
- Recipient of HealthGrades 2009 Orthopedic Surgery Excellence AwardTM, ranking among the top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide in orthopedic care.
- Designation as a "Comprehensive Community Cancer Program" by the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer - a distinction only achieved by one in four hospitals that treat cancer patients.
- Distinguished as having one of only 12 Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence in New Jersey designated by the American College of Radiology.
- Recipient of the 2008 Outstanding Private EMS Agency Award from the New Jersey Office of Emergency Medical Services, Department of Health and Senior Services. Designation as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission and the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.
